Braves can't keep Lopez

baseball-lopez2.jpg

Javy Lopez started with the Atlanta Braves way back in 1993. Now, 15 years playing in the Major Leagues is a feat in itself, but when you consider that Lopez is a catcher, who generally have shorter shelf lives due to the physical constraints, 15 years is amazing.

With that in mind, Lopez had been on the decline for the past couple of years, but he wanted to have a chance to finish out his career with the team that brought him in--the Braves. After playing for other teams like the Orioles and Rockies, he skipped the 2007 season and had hoped that he would be able to get on with the Braves. But--unfortunately--Lopez had an awful spring, and the Braves have decided that he is to be sent to the minors. Lopez has said he more than likely will just retire.

Lopez had an amazing year in 2003 when he hit 43 homeruns for the Braves, but since then has had injury issues and his defense has been less than adequate. Major League baseball has lost a true soldier of the game, but it is still noteworthy as to just Javy's longevity and overall production. He won't leave baseball--in fact, I can see him being a decent manager someday.
