Curse? Not so much

licenseplates.jpg

Ok, so anyone that follows baseball understands that superstitions are big; I mean, a famous line from the baseball movie Bull Durham is "Don't F-- with a streak." Dating all the way back to even the "Billy Goat Curse" of the Chicago Cubs which--if you believe in such, this is still the one that people hold near and dear as the Cubs are at 100 years and counting from winning a world series. The Boston Red Sox claimed that the sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees cursed them and it caused the Yankees to go crazy in terms of success while Boston wallowed in despair until just a couple of years ago when they broke an over 80-year old streak of winning the series.

But having such "lore" and what not is one thing--trying to make a curse is something else. So when I read the story that a construction worker that was building the new Yankee ballpark, that the person intentionally tried to curse the team by burying a David Ortiz jersey in concrete--as the worker was obviously a Boston fan--I just chuckle.

Why? Because of the absurdity of it--first of all, the Yankees took the time to unearth it--second of all, the worker was obviously being stupid for what he did and now faces possible criminal charges. When you have a story like the Billy Goat or even the Babe Ruth legend, the aura around it just seems supernatural--when you have a construction worker intentionally trying to do something like hexing is the same as using a voodoo doll every day hoping for a team to do "bad". That's not class--that's not anything of "legend"--it's just dumb. I hope this guy gets crucified by the media and made a joke of for his assumption. Geesh..Just play ball and may the best team win.
