Devil Rays stop losing streak in a big way

ejacksondevilrays.jpg

The bats had gone cold. There was no rhyme or reason. It wasn't as if the team was playing against uber-good pitching. They just couldn't hit--after going 3-1 to start the season and hitting .283 as a team, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays suddenly forgot how to hit, and promptly "hit" .167. Not surprisingly, that lead to a 4 game losing streak. But then--boom!--like that--they were back.

And the thing is, they didn't even need it.

Riding a great performance from Edwin Jackson, who basically has done little of what you would call "pitching" over the last two years, the Devil Rays walloped the Seattle Mariners 7-0, as Jackson pitched eight innings, and only gave up 2 hits. Wow. What can you say? Devil Rays fans must be stunned...

So, the question is, what team will show up for the rest of the season? Obviously the Rays don't have much success in their history, so it's easy to be pessimistic for what the long-term prospects are, but if the city of Tampa Bay and the talent that is still young and raw can continue to at least play with the kind of heart they did today, you may be surprised what heights this team can leap to.
