Kazmir's mound session a success

kazmir.jpg

Scott Kazmir was the shining light in yet another dreary season with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. So you can understand that there was a collective gasp within the organization when during an intrasquad game on February 25th that Kazmir went down. The prognosis was a left elbow strain, and is one of those tricky injuries where you can put a time table on it, but it really is up to the person as to whether they feel comfortable enough to pitch effectively and long-term.

During a mound session, Kazmir pitched 37 pitches--all straight fastballs--and reported minimal pain. This was great news considering that he was doing well in his return to form but when he was scheduled for a March 16 start, they decided to scratch him. But with this report, they have to be feeling much better about his return.

Kazmir is on the disabled list and is scheduled to come off April 5th. Even though he had a good session, don't look for the Devil Rays to get him off of there then, but at least now they won't have to worry about when exactly things will be good to go--the sad thing is that with the Rays, they are not going to be that strong, so that may mean they still will push Kazmir still too early, but let's hope not.
