Mariners shaking pitching up

MarinersLogo5.jpg

Eric O'Flaherty was a pretty solid middle reliever for the Mariners in 2006. After being drafted in 2003, he made his way to the big leagues and pitched over 50 innings in 2007. Seattle was counting on him to be a very solid middle or setup man for a team that really didn't have tremendous strength in the pitching capacity. However, ever since the season began, O'Flaherty seems to not remember how to get people out, as his ERA is more like something I would put up--over 20!!

Mariners manager John McLaren has noted that the pitching staff has been a little beat up, and with outfielder Mike Morse going on the DL, the Mariners decided to bring up two pitchers, veteran Arthur Rhodes and R.A. Dickey. Both have decent careers under their belt and certainly can assist the team, but can they hurt them as well? Rhodes has only had one appearance in the minors this year and got shelled in that outing, so even though he's got the tools, he's also ancient.

The relief overall has been very shaky. J.J Putz and Miguel Batista, both with 1 save on the year, also boast 9.00 and 6.00 ERAs, respectively, and Batista has 2 losses already (he is a starter by trade). Roy Corcoran and Sean Green have been the best so far, and Corcoran looks very, very good overall--as batters are only hitting .136 against him and he has a smokin' 0.75 WHIP and opponents have yet to score on him. Green, while appearing in 7 games thus far, has had some control problems, but he still owns a 1.17 ERA. Even though these guys are doing well, they can't pitch every day, no matter how much McLaren wants them to.
