Peavy only getting better

oeavy.jpg

Here's some bad news for teams other than the San Diego Padres: Jake Peavy is improving. Huh? What? Seriously? How can that be? I mean, we're talking about a guy who won the equivalent of the Triple Crown of pitching, leading the NL in victories (19), strikeouts (240), and earned run average (2.54). So....he's improving? What, did he put more mustard on his fastball? Shorten up his delivery to hold baserunners better? What?

He now throws a changeup. And if you ask anyone who has hit against Peavy, that's a nightmare. Considering that during last year's domination, his pitching resume was pretty much throwing smoke: a blazing fastball, diving slider, and a knee-buckling breaking ball. Now that he is throwing a changeup with regularity, those numbers could very well improve, which is plain scary.

While he hasn't exactly looked like the Cy Young winner he was last year, he's gotten up his pitch count, which is precisely what the pitching coaches in San Diego were looking for. Don't worry--in no time hitters will be wishing he was throwing like he is now in a few months when he sends them shaking their heads back to the bench.
