Santana as good as gold in opener

santanaopeningday.jpg

He said he wasn't going to do anything crazy. He noted he wouldn't try to be a hero for the New York Mets. But even in all of his verbal attempts to downplay his opening day start for one of baseball's most storied franchises, Johan Santana was the show for the team and proved to be a hero, even though he didn't even want to be.

Santana surrendered three hits to the Florida Marlins, walked two, struck out eight, including four in a row, and threw 100 pitches. His only mistake was to Josh Willingham, but other than that, the game went so smoothly for the superstar that it almost seemed ordinary, almost "Tiger Woods" like--you just expect him to win every time.

David Wright provided the big offensive spark for the Mets, going 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs, as well as extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Last season, he carried over a 2006 streak of 13 games and eventually extended it to 26 games.

Santana didn't dissapoint, and that's bad news for the NL.
