Willis knee troublesome, awaiting MRI results

willispitch.jpg

Dontrelle Willis bolted Florida for Detroit not only for a better career opportunity, but obviously for money. So this early in the season, any type of injury can be a concern for the team that takes that chance--and for Willis, the concern is now. Leaving the game in the first inning against the Chicago White Sox, Willis tweaked his knee on the second batter he faced.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland didn't want to take any chances with his starter, so he pulled him and they did an MRI. The MRI exam will provide a more definitive gauge on the damage and give an idea of how long he'll be out--if at all. If the team goes without any games canceled, he would be scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but my guess is that he'll miss a minimum of a start or two.

If it would be any more than that, this would be a tremendous blow to the Tigers, who have been reeling from the start, and having an injury that would be long-term to a guy who had the potention to be one of the bigger pitchers in the AL this year would just be devastating. Regardless, this couldn't have come at a worse time for them.
